Susheela Jayapal Announces Major Endorsements

Today former Multnomah County Commissioner and candidate for Congress in Oregon’s Third Congressional District Susheela Jayapal announced endorsements by two high profile groups advocating for Asian American representation in Congress: Asian Americans & Pacific Islanders Rising & Empowering Political Action Committee (ASPIRE PAC) - the political arm of the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Members of Congress - and Indian American Impact.

“I’m grateful to ASPIRE PAC and Indian American Impact for their endorsements. In this campaign, I bring my experience as an immigrant, a person of color, a woman, a mom - experiences of what it’s like to navigate systems that weren’t created for everyone, and in fact often were created to exclude so many,” Jayapal said. “From coming to the US to attend a college where I was one of a very small group of international students, to practicing law, to business and nonprofit  board rooms where I’ve been the only woman, and the only person of color more times than not, I understand how important representation is. I used my presence and my voice in those rooms to advance issues of access and equity, and I’ll do the same in Congress.”

“Susheela Jayapal is a trusted champion on the issues that matter to the AAHNPI community. She has been a tireless advocate for women’s reproductive freedom, gun safety legislation that keeps our communities safe, and protecting our environment,” said ASPIRE Chair, Congresswoman Grace Meng. “As Multnomah County Commissioner, she has fought for more affordable housing, more support for immigrants and refugees, and support for survivors of domestic violence. Susheela is a strong progressive voice who knows how to get things done, and ASPIRE PAC is proud to endorse her campaign.”

“Change begins with representation, and we’re proud to stand with these strong leaders who are spearheading progress in their communities,” said Indian American Impact interim Executive Director, Taher Hasanali “We are proud to support her historic campaign for Oregon’s Third Congressional District.”

In Congress, Susheela will continue to be a strong progressive voice, fighting for the health and safety of our community, championing abortion rights, taking on big polluters and fighting climate change, and standing up to election deniers to defend our democracy. She’s committed to ensuring America lives up to its promise of opportunity for all, with no community left behind; and to the vision of  a country that we can be proud to leave to our children and our grandchildren.
