Susheela Jayapal Kicks Off Campaign for Oregon’s Third Congressional District with Strong Community

Yesterday, Susheela Jayapal, Democratic candidate for Oregon’s third congressional district, officially launched her campaign to succeed Congressman Earl Blumenauer, surrounded by a crowd of nearly 100 attendees and former constituents from all parts of the district.

Jayapal, a former Multnomah County Commissioner who announced her campaign on November 1, was the first candidate to enter the race and raised a formidable $109,100 in the first 72 hours of her announcement and gained backing from more than 60 local leaders and elected officials.

At the kickoff, Jayapal emphasized her priorities in Congress include fighting climate change, spurring federal action on housing and homelessness, defending abortion rights, and protecting our civil rights and democracy.

Jayapal also spoke about her journey to America when she was 16, and her parents' sacrifice to give her the opportunity to attend college in the states.

"Their sacrifice, and the desire to pay it forward, drives me. Because of my parents, I’ve had a glimpse of the promise of America and for 30 years I’ve called this district home," Jayapal said. "I ask you to join me, in fighting and working for an America as good as its promise. Together we will build a future in which every Oregonian thrives.”

Ironworkers Local 29 leader, Lorne Bulling, introduced Jayapal at the kickoff and spoke about her strong record of supporting working families.

“Ironworkers Local 29 is the first labor union to make an endorsement in the race for Oregon’s 3rd congressional district, and we’re so excited to stand with Susheela, because she stands with working people,” Bulling said. “ Susheela knows that working people are the backbone of our community and has never shied away from fighting for our shared prosperity.”
